The top image is the PL image of the side-QW.
The PL from side-QW is polarized parallel to each side-QW structure, since the dipole moment of heavy hole inside the quantum well is polarized toward the quantum well direction.
So when we placed a polarizing filter in front of the CCD camera, perpendicular to each side-QW structures, we can separate the PL image like bottom two images.
